Kalnaābranti Werewolf Pine

In the earlier descriptions of the Werewolf pine it is said that the pine was very picturesque and can be noticed from a bigger distance. Now it could be found that the top part of the pine and several bigger branches have been lost, only two of the biggest branches have survived therefore its value in the scenery has been considerably decreased. At the same time the pine continues to live. It grows at the very side of a road, its trunk is “lumpy”, the circumference of the tree at the height of 1.3 m is 2.5 m. No folklore has been recorded about the Werewolf Pine. However, the possible sacral character of the pine is suggested by its name. It is very much likely that the Kalnaābranti pine has somehow been connected with the ancient Ābranti Tenis Chapel – the forerunner of Vangaži Church. In the written records Ābrami Tenis Chapel which acquired its name from freeholder Ābrams Hinza who had lived nearby has been mentioned since 1624.
