Smiltene Lutheran Church

This is the only typical cross type church built in Latvia (1859) and it has been granted the national cultural importance monuments status.

In the seal of Smiltene church there is a number 1370, which has been  adopted as church establishing year. The first wooden church was in the center of the Knights castle. In 1702 Russian troops burned the church and took its bell to Pskov. The current church building was rebuilt in 1859. The windows are in Gothic style, the interior is decorated with excellent wood carvings and throughout the upper walls of the church runs Latvian symbol motive. The organ was built by Racmanis and Rollers. It has 20 voices and cost 3400 gold rubles.

Ernst von Lipharda altar painting "The resurrection of Christ" was gifted by the owner of Smiltene manor  at that time - Mrs.Bandava. For unknown reasons It was restored by J. Rosenthal a few years later.

Church clock was a gift from former President of Latvia - Kārlis Ulmanis.

Priests who worked in the church were significant personalities, served to God and people. Svante Gustavs Dīcs was famous for his sacred songs. Jēkabs Lange wrote the first German - Latvian dictionary. Kārlis Kundziņš wrote a book called "My life-long march" about his life in Smiltene and its people.

Currently, church services are held every Sunday, there is a variety of artist and choral concerts.
