During the Middle Ages the town had five gates. The Rauna Gate was situated at the beginning of the current Rīgas Street in the 14th to 15th centuries. Hence, in the Middle Ages the road from Rauna to Alūksne and Pskov and the road from Trikata to Pskov both had their beginnings here.
Nowadays the reconstruction of the foundations and the overground fragments of the gate of the city wall create a conception of the medieval stone wall, the size of the gate and its profoundness. Passing through the gate, you can visualize how the inhabitants of Cēsis felt walking on this pavement in the 17th and 18th centuries. The gate itself symbolically connects two parts of the city – the old town and the Vienības Square, which is considered as the centre of the city.
