Rožu (Rose) Square

Rožu (Rose) Square, the former market square, which is located in front of St. John’s Church was known as a lively marketplace from the middle of the 13th century. There was also a pillar of punishment and a well in South-western corner of the square. In the early 20th century the old market square became too small for the city, so in the 1920’s it was moved to its current location, and in 1927 it was decided to turn the free area of the former square into a small public garden.

The ancient marketplace has become the most important and active part of Cēsis' Old town. It’s also the location of the city's Christmas tree which is lit up on the first day of Advent. In summer the fountain is a place for resting with your family, where the children can run between the rows of water jets in the warm weather, and in the evenings it becomes a sociable meeting point for local people and town guests. In this place, every year during the first Advent the town Christmas tree is lit.
