The Kaņieris Lake hillfort was discovered in 1867 by V. Dērings. It has been much written about; however it has not been explored archaeologically. E. Brastiņš recognised this castle mound to be a peculiar one, because it is the only castle mound that is situated so close to the sea, in a swampy and uninhabited place. Kaņieris hillfort trail leads to the Kaņieris hillfort and the stone ramparts.
