Trail is continuing the Mazsalaca Skaņaiskalns park trail further along the right bank of the Salaca, recommended to people who want to enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the Salaca valley with Middle Devonian red sandstone outcrops, fallow meadows and river rapids, and experience nature in its silence, peace and integrity.
The trail is located one end at the resting place opposite Skaņaiskalns rock, and the other end at the river Ramata estuary in river Salaca.
What to see:
- Skaņaiskalns rock – sandstone outcrop – a fracture surface of the ancient Salaca river valley, a rock with a peculiar echo effect. Outcrop has two caves and a freshwater spring.
- Silmači rock – sandstone outcrop with two caves and cave niche with freshwater springs.
- Silmači stone – gneiss rock with pegmatite veins, visible surface part reaches the volume of 18m3.
- Salaca ancient river valley terraces and floodplains. Some of the terraces are formed simultaneously with the glacial valley beneath the glacier blankets, and are covered with boulders. In the river bend there is a wide flood terrace, covered with meadows and intensive beaver presence in the bushy part.
- Dauģēni rock and caves – gorgeous sandstone outcrop with two caves, which are the longest caves in Latvia (346 and 159 m), with freshwater springs. Only the cave entrance parts are available.
- Dauģēni sand pit – sand and gravel deposit, formed by melting glacier waters filling cracks into sandstone; a pond has been created and extraction is still ongoing. It is also a home to three local importance boulders.
- Nīkuce rock – rapakivi boulder, surface part reaches the volume of 11m3.
- Pēce swamp – swamp landscape near the steep river bank.
- Ramata Boreal Forest – old, untouched coniferous forest.
