Monument "Deer in the Zūras forests 100 years" ("Staltbriežiem zūru mežos 100 gadu")

 

19-20s At the turn of the 20th century, the brothers Friedrich and Werner von Buholci, owners of the manors of Gārzde, Zūras and Tārgale, and their neighbor Wilhelm von Kochschul began to breed wild boar and red deer. They set up a 5-hectare paddock and in January 1911 they let the first 16 red deer that were brought from Poland. 26 red deer were brought to the Zur forests: 18 cows and eight bulls. After some time the red deer were released.

 

Red deer settled well in the manor forests of about 10,000 ha, and over time continued to develop successfully both in the forests of Kurzeme and elsewhere in the Baltics.
