Preiļi Roman Catholic church

Preiļi Roman Catholic church is the highest building in Preiļi.

In 1771 or 1772 a landlord Jazeps Borhs built a new church. It was consecrated by Dominicans. In 1873 Preiļi parish priest Jarockis had intended to renovate the old church, therefore, convened a parish meeting. The parish meeting decided that rather than renovate the old church, a new church must be built. Permit for new church construction was received in 1878. The old church was pulled down, but before the new church construction (1886), religious services were held in the manor park, where a chapel of counts Borhs (built in 1817) was located.

The church building was completed in 1886, it was consecrated by Preili priest Peteris Paulins Danusevics. It is intended for the 1200 worshipers. Preili church is 28 m long (without the presbytery and the lobby) and 31 m wide building with a tin roof, built of grey boulders. The church tower is 30 m high but with the cross 33,35 m.

Around the church is a garden, which turns on the stone wall fence with a tin roof. At the entrance to the church is a red brick gate. In both corners of the garden, there are two small chapels. In the tower are three bells. “The Holy Peter” – the great bell, “The Holy Francis” – the average one and “The Holy Teresa” – the little bell. There is the organ, established in 1938.
