Original church was built on the grounds of old cemetery and congregation was called “Ozolu draudze” (Oak Congregation), because the church was built from the oak logs. Church was small, without tower, but there was St. Ignatius altar with the picture of the Saint. Organ and benches were taken from the church of Skaistkalne. When the current church was built, old cemetery church was demolished and big casting iron cross was placed in that spot, which is still in its place. It is placed where the original altar was located and there’s an inscription that says “Congregation love 1876” in Latvian.
Beginnings of the church as it can be seen today, are dated from 1861, when construction of the church was started under the supervision of dean Mikulic and funded by his own resources and built by the parishioners. Every catholic around the area sent the people to help the construction works.
Church is forked boulder building, 23 meters in length, 10 meters in width and 7 meters high with one, approximately 1.5 meters high tower and roof, built from the clay tiles. Tower is equipped with two bells, bought in 1930 – accordingly 120 kg and 60 kg in weight. There were 3 bells in the tower at one point, but they were lost during the World War I.
