Mūrnieku Bridge (Mason Bridge)

Mūrnieku Bridge (Mason Bridge) is one of the oldest stone bridges in Latvia. The triple arch bridge was constructed during the second half of the 19th century across the old river bed of Abava (now it is called Vecupe – the Old River). Possibly, the bridge was built so long because back in the day Abava was much wider and maps of the time show that the area was rather boggy. There were attempts to bomb the bridge in 1944, but only the middle arch was bombed. After the war ended, the damaged arch was simply filled with stones and gravel, the road surface was evened out – and the bridge continued its life with the remaining arches.
